Celebrate National Sisters Day with a Classic Norman Rockwell

National Sisters Day falls on the first Sunday of August every year. This year, sisters can relish their unique relationship on August 4, and Mini Masters Art has gorgeous prints and delightful frames to help you celebrate sisterhood.

Today, we're discussing Norman Rockwell's classic "Going Out".  Rockwell's usual style transports the audience to a simpler, slower time to celebrate the special bond between sisters.

Going Out by Norman Rockwell

This painting was featured on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on October 21, 1933.

It depicts an envious youngster watching her elder sister preen for a formal outing—perhaps a school dance with her beaux. Immediately, the viewer sees the younger subject watching closely and emulating her older sister with her tiny hairbrush. Enjoying her superiority and making the most of it, the older girl poses and primps with her hand mirror at her ruffled vanity.

All of Rockwell's standard techniques are on display here. You don't need to be an avid fan to appreciate his use of vivid colors and bright, clean whites. Any audience will notice the subject's sheer dress material, and one can only imagine how much time the subject spent making that dress (which was common in the 1930s.)

And remember the lovely little dog in the corner! Rockwell frequently featured beloved pets in his work. While no formal count has been done, we know of at least 50 Rockwell pieces that include a canine. One of our favorites, by the way, is At The Vets.

About Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell has been called the "all American" of US artists. For many, his pieces evoke nostalgia and warm childhood memories. His work was featured on The Saturday Evening Post for five decades, and his techniques involved real models posed in familiar American settings.
